  • Community Tax Law Project http://www.ctlp.org – provides free legal help to Virginia’s low wage families and individuals experiencing economic harm because of a tax problem. (804) 358-5855.
  • disAbility Law Center of Virginia http://dlcv.org – Virginia’s official designated Protection and Advocacy organization. Provides help to people with disabilities in Virginia to expand and defend their rights, including supporting self-advocacy groups and legal assistance, and helping to obtain services and treatment.   • Drive to Work http://www.drivetowork.org – assists qualifying low-income and previously incarcerated persons to restore driving privileges so they can drive to work and hold a job.   • Hogar Immigrant Services https://www.hogarimmigrantservices.org – Offers immigration legal assistance at a reduced rate and hosts monthly naturalization workshops. (703) 534-9805.
  • Legal Information Network for Cancer (LINC) http://www.cancerlinc.org – provides legal, financial, and community resources to individuals confronted with issues arising from the diagnosis and treatment to cancer. (804) 562-0371.
  • MRWBA Domestic Relations Pamphlet http://mrwba.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/English-Pamphlet.pdf – booklet published by the Metropolitan Regional Women’s Bar Association to help the public understand the general legal circumstances they may face in resolving domestic relations problems under Virginia law. http://mrwba.org/
  • Project for the Empowerment of Survivors (PES) http://www.vsdvalliance.org/#/resources-helpayuda/legal-help – a new initiative offered through the Statewide Hotline of the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance. Provides trauma informed legal services and legal advocacy to callers of the hotline from Virginia who are experiencing sexual or intimate partner violence, dating violence, human trafficking and hate crimes. Survivors and advocates can access the PES services by calling the Statewide Hotline at 1-800-838-8238 to speak directly with a trained Legal Advocate and to be linked to Legal Services, or by logging on to www.vadata.org/chat to enter into a confidential chat with an advocate.
  • Statewide Senior Legal Hotline – toll-free hotline offering legal assistant and advice for Virginians aged 60 or over. (844) 802-5910.
  • Medicare Resources for Mental Health Care – https://www.medicareplans.com/mental-health-care-outpatient-for-medicare/ a comprehensive guide that aims to help medicare recipients identify the different types of outpatient and inpatient services that are covered, eligibility, and how to get help paying for services and medications.

  • freelegalanswers.org https://virginia.freelegalanswers.org – online pro bono question and answer website where low and modest income Virginians can post a civil law question and receive an e-mail answer from a Virginia lawyer.
  • Virginia Judicial System Self-Help Website https://selfhelp.vacourts.gov – provides neutral legal information and resources for self-represented litigants in Virginia Courts.
  • VA Law Help 2 Go http://www.valawhelp2go.org – a mobile-friendly platform that provides the public with access to brief informational videos about common civil legal issues in Virginia. A link at the end of each video directs the viewer to the Virginia statewide website for more information and to connect them with the appropriate legal aid provider in their area.
  • Virginia Lawyer Referral Service http://www.vsb.org/vlrs – the Virginia State Bar’s consumer service department that connects the public with Virginia lawyers based on specific practice of law and geographic Virginia locations. There is a $35 fee for the initial, thirty-five-minute phone consultation during which you may obtain information on your legal options.   • Virginia Legal Aid https://www.valegalaid.org – website that can help you find civil legal information and answers to commonly asked questions. Also contains information on legal aid and pro bono programs in Virginia where you may receive free legal assistance. 1-866-LEGLAID (1-866-534-5243).
  • Virginia Military and Veteran Legal Resource Guide https://www.oag.state.va.us/files/Veterans_Legal_Resource_Guide_Final_PlusHeaders.pdf – a guide which helps Virginia servicemembers, military families, and veterans understand the unique legal protections, rights, and resources available to them under the law.
  • Virginia Poverty Law Center http://www.vplc.org – provides training to local Legal Aid program staff, private bar attorneys, and low-income clients, relating exclusively to the legal rights of Virginia’s poor. Assists low-income Virginians and Legal Aid programs with legislative and administrative proposals affecting the poor in Virginia as well as providing technical assistance, training and publications to Virginia’s Legal Aid programs in the following substantive areas: consumer law, domestic and sexual violence law, elder law, family law, health law, housing law and public benefits law.   • Fairfax Law Foundation http://www.fairfaxlawfoundation.org – a nonprofit organization that provides residents of Fairfax County, as well as Northern Virginia nonprofits, with direct access to the legal community. (703) 246-2740.
  • Good Samaritan Advocates https://www.goodsamaritanadvocates.org/ – a faith-based legal aid organization providing no cost legal services and advice to low-income individuals in greater Washington, DC. Pro bono clinic attorneys provide free legal counsel on the following legal issues: family law, child support, domestic situations, landlord, and commercial disputes. (703) 761-5014.
  • Just Neighbors https://www.justneighbors.org – provides immigration legal services to low-income immigrants and refugees in Northern Virginia, with a focus on humanitarian-based immigration cases. Just Neighbors does not take removal/deportation or asylum application cases. (703) 979-1240.
  • Legal Aid Justice Center https://www.justice4all.org – provides free legal services and legal representation on non-criminal matters to low-income individuals.   • Carrico Center for Pro Bono & Public Service https://law.richmond.edu/public-service/pro-bono/index.html – created by the University of Richmond School of Law, the Center connects the skills and talents of its student body with the greater Richmond community and a network of regional, national, and international programs.   • Central Virginia Legal Aid Society http://cvlas.org – a non-profit law firm which provides free legal assistance in civil cases to low income residents of Central Virginia. Richmond office: (804) 648-1012. Petersburg office: (804) 862-1100. Charlottesville office: (434) 296-8851.
  • Forthright Legal https://www.forthrightlegal.org – nonprofit law firm that collaborates with community-based service organizations to enhance local understanding of the complexity of immigration and provides low-cost legal services for the clients of such service agencies and for others who do not qualify for Legal Aid and cannot afford a market-rate lawyer. Fees are scaled to client income, using the federal poverty level. (434) 260-1329.
  • Greater Richmond Bar Foundation http://www.grbf.org – seeks to expand public access to the justice system in Central Virginia by facilitating the delivery of pro bono legal services and service projects. Through these programs and services, the GRBF helps the central Virginia region with its priority needs for pro bono services and helps lawyers connect with pro bono clients. (804) 780-2600. Two of the pro bono programs are:
  • Hunton & Williams Church Hill Office – provides pro bono services to financially limited persons. For a modest fee, which the firm donates to charity, the Church Hill office offers legal services in family law (uncontested divorce, adoptions, name changes), housing and real estate (landlord-tenant and housing issues), and guardianships. The office also accepts (without fee) all uncontested divorce case clients from the general Richmond area who are referred by the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society. (804) 775-2248.
  • Hunton & Williams Charlottesville Office – provides free legal services to low-income Charlottesville area victims of domestic violence and to immigrants seeking asylum from persecution in their country of origin. (434) 220-3111.
  • “It’s Time for Justice” – Central Virginia Legal Aid Radio Show http://cvlas.org/central-virginia-legal-aid-radio-show – Host and legal aid attorney Marty Wegbreit explores the ins and outs of civil (non-criminal) law.   • Legal Aid Justice Center https://www.justice4all.org – provides free legal services and legal representation on non-criminal matters to low-income individuals.
