Interstate Parental Placement Adoption

Interstate adoptions involve a few more hoops to jump through than in-state adoption. This is mainly because (1) the laws of two different states need to be analyzed and often harmonized and (2) approval needs to be obtained by the interstate offices of both states pursuant to the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC).

In Virginia, there basically are two types of interstate adoptions
(click on appropriate one for a more detailed overview):

– when the child is in Virginia and the adoptive parents are in another state, or

– when adoptive parents are in Virginia and the child is in another state.
